When Harry Met Sally

It’s the classic rom-com. Boy meets girl. Boy and girl become friends. Girl falls for boy. Boy doesn’t feel the same way. Boy and girl live happily ever after. But, it’s superbly acted, the sub-plot with their two best friends is excellent and it contains one of the best movie scenes ever; the fake orgasm at the restaurant. A scene that every heterosexual male should see once in their life.
Love Actually
What’s not to love about this movie. It teaches us 2 main things.
  1. There’s no right way to fall in love
We meet the Prime Minister (Hugh Grant) who falls in love with his caterer. We meet nude stand-ins who fall in love at work. There’s the tragic writer (Colin Firth) who falls in love with his Portuguese housekeeper. And a lovesick school boy who falls for the talented singer.
All of these stories are presented beautifully and you fall in love with their characters. And that all these loves are equally valid, regardless of their origin.
  1. There’s more than one kind of love
The film opens with the aging rocker (Bill Nighy) and his bromance with his manager. There’s also Karen (Emma Thompson) who’s love for her children keeps her marriage together with Harry (Alan Rickman), as well as her hilarious friendship and platonic love for Daniel (Liam Neeson) who’s a recent widower dealing with his stepson (lovesick school boy).
Lastly, special shoutout to Emma Thompson’s acting in this film - you will feel all the feels when she listens to that Joni Mitchell CD and realises that her husband is having an affair. That heart-breaking moment alone makes this movie worth a watch!
